Traveling through the deluge and posting delays

Hello all, sorry for the stupidly long delay between posts but this thing called school is kicking my tuckus. I just finished up a major presentation so I have a few hours to decompress before I wrap up these two courses this week.

So much has been happening with Li Li. I don’t know where to start. She started at with her day care provider Lei 3 weeks ago and Li Li has done fabulous. We were very worried that when she started going to day care she’d get very stressed out once she started hearing Mandarin again. If anything she’s happier than ever – who knew that was possible.

Lei is amazing with her – and Lei’s children are 1 and 3 and they give Li Li so much attention – in addition Lei’s mother-in-law lives with her and she speaks no english but obviously gives Li Li so much love. We are very thankful we found such a wonderful family to take care of Li Li, it makes dropping her off completely worry free. Something I know my mom never experienced when she dropped me off at daycare (probably because I created all the problems….)

Before school started getting super intense again we snuck away to NYC for the annual photography show we attend.

NYC View

We stayed in midtown because it was close to the show. It was our first trip with Li Li (aside from the obvious time in China) and she is amazing. She couldn’t have been happier being rolled around the city – she just sat and took it all in.

Our friend and artist Sara Lee was able to visit with us and we ate a very good meal together.

NYCWalking

Thank you Sara Lee – you should check out her web site http://www.saraleemurals.com/ because her murals and other paintings are just plain awesome.

With some trepidation we went to the Photo show expecting dirty looks from the exhibitors but Li Li charmed them all. We had people wanting to hold her, people scolding us for letting her sit on the carpet (people she was in China – that carpet is just fine), and one incredibly nice gentlemen who gave us a children’s book he had published 30 years ago which included a tipped in signed photo he’d taken of Diane Arbus with her TLR camera in hand. Very cool and something we’ll treasure for a very long time. We saw lots of photography most of it insanely priced – if we had a few spare hundred thousand dollars we could have bought only a few pictures that we liked. But it was fun seeing the art work and Li Li spent a total of about 8 hours at the show over 2 days. Pretty impressive for a 13-month-old.

In China the hotels had cribs for us but now we were stateside and business hotels get a little crabby when asked for cribs so we brought our porta sleeper for Li Li. She loved it. The first night she did laps around the inside of it for about 2 hours and only stopped when we tried covering it with a coat so she could fall asleep.

Porta Sleeper

After 3 nights in the city (thank you hilton points) we decided it was time to head home. Of course we chose the day with the 2nd highest total rainfall in NYC history. They had 8 inches of rain in 24 hours. It was wet. Really wet. Truly a Biblical deluge. Shortly after we left no trains were allowed to leave the city for several hours because of water on the tracks. Anyway we all took a short nap on the train.

Sleep Train

I’ll try to post again next Sunday since I’ve been remiss in my postings.

Potrait of the artist with a young woman…

The 21st century’s greatest mural painter, as far as we know, came for a visit over Easter weekend. Sara Lee had been chomping at the bit to come for a visit and this was the first weekend it worked for her schedule.

SaraLee and Li Li room

We love having Sara Lee come for a visit because she is just so much fun. The big news is that Sara Lee has started her business painting murals. www.saraleemurals.com She designed the website herself with some help from friends. So if you know anyone who wants a custom mural, of any size, send her an email. She’ll travel anywhere from her homebase in NYC – so don’t let distance be an issue.

Of course it was Easter Weekend and Passover. Our next door neighbors have a traditional egghunt every year and even though their boys ages are 23, 22, 18, and 16 they don’t let that stop them. Although the oldest is in Peru so it was the three “youngest” who battled it out this year. The egghunt has evolved into a full-contact scramble complete with hip-checks, stiff-arms and just plain shoving all for the coveted Pink Egg with the $5 bill inside

Egghunt Scramble start

The start came a little earlier than usual because the squirrels seem to like plastic eggs stuffed with chocolate – 3 eggs were lost to the squirrels before the hunt began.

EggHunt 3

As you can tell this is no eggunt for the timid. Here Catherine stands back protecting Li Li from the crush of hunters, you can even see a little purple egg about to be plucked.

Sara Lee and Li Li Easter

The boys were gracious though and gave Li Li her very own egg since she wasn’t ready to compete this year. She enjoyed playing with it with Sara Lee’s help. No chocolate for her this year though, she’ll have to wait to acquire that particular addiction.

Bath Update

For those who remember Li Li’s particular aversion to bathing she has recently begun to enjoy the experience. Here she beams her 100-watt smile stage left to her mother.

Happy bath

She’s a toy hoarder in the bath. She likes to have all of her toys within arms reach. That’s all for now. Hopefully we’ll be able to get more photos up shortly. -t

Finally, a new post

Sorry for the long delay between posts but it’s been a busy few weeks here at Li Li central. I finished up my last set of classes at school on Sunday.  When you miss 4 weeks of an 8-week class, the workload to catch up can be daunting. But thanks to my wife and my study group, I finally finished everything up in time to start a new group of classes. I’ve heard from Babson Fast Track Alumni that the biggest challenge after finishing school is how to spend all of one’s new found free time. I look forward to that problem.

LLSwing

While I was in California, Catherine took Li Li to the children’s park and Li Li loved the swing. We may have a thrill-seeker on our hands. Of course that would be payback for the numerous heart attacks I gave my parents.

On Saturday, aka St. Patrick’s Day, we had a party to celebrate all things Li Li. The party was a huge success with many, many friends and family representing 4 states all dropping by to eat, to drink and to look at our little girl. Many of our friends brought their children along and Li Li never had a moment alone since most of the children happened to be girls – and the girls loved playing with Li Li – while the few boys were the hit of the party. Of course the adults loved playing with Li Li too. Our dear daughter just soaked it all in, basking in the attention and having a grand time. I, of course, was exhausted, and without the tremendous help of our parents I would have been even more exhausted.

Li Li Bedtime

Li Li invokes Maggie’s protection to keep from going down for her nap. Plus Maggie acts as a backstop since Li Li still has a slight tendency to fall backwards.

LLMomReading

Gram Reads to Li Li before her nap.

My mom came for a visit in order to get her Li Li time. She of course fell in love with our little one. She read to Li Li, played with Li Li, put Li Li down for naps, and took more pictures than I even I thought was possibe. She even rescued me when my dear, beautiful, angelic daughter had a major, EPA notification caliber, toxic waste spill blowout involving a box of baby wipes, three changes of clothes, two changes of bedding and a household desmellification finally culminating in a cleansing bath for all involved. Of course Mom kept saying “this is nothing, when you were little…..” And Li Li was just wondering what all the fuss was about.

Birthday candle

“Li Li blow out the candle…”

Another milestone was reached when on Wednesday the 14th, Li Li had her 1st birthday. I was of course out of town on a business trip on an airplane with very mixed feelings. Yes, I needed to work but I didn’t enjoy missing her first birthday. The fact that Li Li had no idea it was her birthday, was a cold comfort. I didn’t like the precedent it set. We had a nice little dinner party Thursday evening when I got home with Catherine’s parents, her sister Christine, Li Li’s cousin Lila, my mom and the three of us.

Li Li Cake

Li Li likes merengue cake, but she isn’t too fond of Kiwi…

And our zen lighting moment of the day because I just can’t resist taking a picture of my beautiful daughter when the light is just right….

That’s all for now. We’ll try to do better in the future. We promise. -t

Bar Hopping, Walking on snow and nature photos

Another week has come and gone, and our dear daughter is more wonderful than ever. The brain fog from lack of sleep is gradually diminishing and we are finally starting to carve out a routine. Li Li is sleeping through the night now which we are very thankful for, in fact the biggest issue with sleep now is the fact that she sometimes will fight going to sleep and will scream hysterically refusing to console herself for several hours. If we pick her up and carry her around she’s fine, as soon as she touches the mattress though – the waterworks and noise return. We’ll all figure it out together.

Catherine’s sister mailed us a pouch which Catherine is thrilled by – Li Li hasn’t made up her mind about it just yet.

 LiLi Pouch

We thought she looked just like a little joey poking an arm and head out of her mother’s pouch – although she’s much cuter.

I had school last week and Catherine brought Li Li up at the end of the day so that I could show off my daughter to my classmates. So we took her to the bar after class where one of my classmates remarked – “she’s way too comfortable hanging out in a bar…”. Decide for yourself.

 BarLili

I’m six months into an executive mba program at Babson college and my classmates have been very supportive, in fact Li Li is the 3rd child among our classmates since we started. And we are expecting at least one more by June.

Our warm, snowless winter is no more as temperatures have been cold and we’ve had lots of snow and ice since returning home. We took Li Li out for a short walk in some nearby woods one recent morning before her morning nap. She of course loves being out and about and didn’t mind the snowflakes falling on her face.

 LiliSnowWide

Li Li has embraced the pouch and Catherine’s back is much happier than using the Bjorn.

LiliSnow

While walking in the trees a big clump of snow fell on us – Li Li just smiled, notice the snow on her chin.

LiMagCathSnow

Maggie is now Li Li’s biggest fan, especially once she realized that Li Li drops cheerios and other food – plus Maggie is now almost guaranteed a nice long walk every day, sometimes twice. Notice the happy lab in the distance standing guard as Catherine slogs through the snow.

SnowPortrait

A quick portrait – notice Li Li’s backward tilt. She likes to lean back or be carried with her body horizontal. Not sure why – it’s just what she likes.

The snow was pretty so I took a few “artsy” landscape photos. I couldn’t help myself.

That’s all for now. The days of updating the blog every day are over. We’ll try to do an update at least once a week – although we’re not promising anything.
